Canadian Thoracic Society Publishes Position Paper on Spirometry
The Canadian Thoracic Society Pulmonary Function Standards Clinical Assembly is proud to announce the release of the first Canadian position statement on the use of spirometry in primary care. The position statement, entitled "Spirometry in Primary Care", was developed to provide guidance on key factors affecting the quality of spirometry testing in the primary care setting. The paper may also serve to guide the accreditation process for spirometry in each province.

Radon and Lung Cancer
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. A high percentage of New Brunswick homes which participated in a two-year Health Canada study were found to have high levels of radon. The Cross-Canada Survey of Radon Concentrations in Homes – Final Report found that 6.9% of Canadian homes on average but 20% of homes in New Brunswick have high levels of radon.

CTS Publishes New Guidelines on Asthma
The Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) Asthma Clinical Assembly is proud to announce an update to the "Canadian Thoracic Society Asthma Management Continuum – 2010 Consensus Summary for children six years of age and over, and adults". The update provides evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of asthma in preschoolers (age 0-5 years), children (age 6-11 years) and adults (≥12 years), and addresses the following key clinical issues:
- the role of non-invasive measurements of airway inflammation for the adjustment of anti-inflammatory therapy;
- the initiation of adjunct therapy to inhaled corticosteroids for uncontrolled asthma; and
- the escalation of controller medication for acute loss of asthma control as part of a self-management action plan.

CTS Publishes New Guidelines on Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
The CTS COPD Clinical Assembly is delighted to announce the publishing of "Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Targeted Testing and Augmentation Therapy: A Canadian Thoracic Society Clinical Practice Guideline". This clinical practice guideline provides evidence-based recommendations on targeted testing and augmentation therapy for alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (A1AT) in COPD patients. It is intended for all healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients suffering from COPD attributable to A1AT deficiency or patients for whom targeted testing of A1AT deficiency is being considered.

Over the past year, I have been talking to the public and to stakeholders about the tremendous challenges our health-care system is facing. Our population is aging. New Brunswick is the most unhealthy province in the country. The cost of providing health-care services is increasing at a rate that is beginning to threaten our ability to educate our children, support economic development and protect and promote our natural beauty. Our publicly-funded, universal health-care system is at risk.
